George J. Kostas Nanoscale Technology and Manufacturing Research Center

Welcome to George J. Kostas Center

The burgeoning of nanotechnology is producing innovations in a broad spectrum of fields. To move these nanoscale inventions from discovery to commercial products, the Kostas Nanoscale Technology and Manufacturing Research Center at Northeastern was established in 2005 through a generous gift from Mr. George J. Kostas ’43. The 10,000 sq. ft. user facility housed in the Egan Research Centre of Northeastern University’s Boston campus, is the university’s Shared Research micro and nanofabrication Facility.

At KNMRC we are always working towards building an integrated community that is equipped to tackle research challenges. In order to realize this goal, our facility includes well-organized, spacious clean room spaces down to Class 10 that are equipped with instruments for micro-and nanofabrication processes, imaging, and characterization studies. We provide support and materials based on user fees and have capabilities for processing 3, 4, and 6-inch wafers as well as smaller parts at a lower cost. Non-cleanroom lab spaces include chemical hoods; device-testing areas with a full range of electrical test instruments, design and sample preparation/ packaging areas. Supported by highly trained and talented staff with a combined 75 years of fabrication and characterization experience, we provide assistance to the users with their process development.

Our research areas range from but are not limited to, nanoelectronics, nanodevices, sensors, energy storage, metrology, and NEMs to exploration studies in fundamental science and engineering.

New users need to complete orientation and safety preparedness training before being granted access. To help proper equipment selection for process development, detailed tool information can be found on this page and scheduling tools on neu.fbs.io makes billing a hassle-free process.

We welcome new researchers from all disciplines who wish to explore the use of micro and nano fabrication and characterization tools in expanding their research portfolio.
