NU-RES Boston Workshop 2023
Northeastern University Research Enterprise Services (NU-RES) Summer Workshop Monday, June 12, 2023
After the success of the NU-RES 2022 Summer Conference, we are delighted to invite the Northeastern community to the NU-RES 2023 Summer Workshop. This is a one-day workshop that will be hosted both in person on the Boston main campus at the Raytheon Amphitheater in the Egan Research Center building and virtually via Microsoft Teams. This conference workshop is designed to strengthen our working relationships across the university, look for ways to reduce faculty burden and improve processes, as well as providing an opportunity to learn how other departments intersect with research and research administration.
There will be two raffle drawings during the workshop with three winners in each drawing. The first drawing will occur during the lunch hour and the second drawing will occur after the conclusion of the day’s final session. Qualtrics registration data will be used as raffle entries and the data will be pulled into a virtual randomizer to choose the winners. You must be present either virtually or in person during the drawing in order to claim a prize. If your name is pulled and you are not present then another name will be chosen. 1st place will receive a $50 e-gift card to a local restaurant/business in their geographic area while 2nd and 3rd will receive $25. If you are a winner you will be contacted after the end of the workshop for additional information

Session Description
It is NSF policy to foster safe and harassment-free environments wherever science is conducted. NSF’s policy recognizes that a community effort is essential to eliminate sexual and other forms of harassment in science and to build inclusive scientific climates where people can learn, grow, and thrive. Following the implementation of the NSF PAPPG 23-1, several solicitations from BIO and GEO will soon require the submission of a Safe and Inclusive Work Environments Plan that will be considered as part of the Broader Impacts criteria during the review process. Although only solicitations from the BIO and GEO directorates are requiring these plans, the concerns they are supposed to address should be considered equally important across all research disciplines and in consideration of any sponsor agency or type of researcher.
This session will include a brief discussion regarding the administrative and compliance requirements with the NU-RES Compliance team. We will hear from representative(s) of Northeastern’s Marine Science Center regarding the importance of developing and implementing effective field safety plans from an academic perspective. This session will then close with a panel discussion with the Ombuds Office, Office of University Equity and Compliance, and the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and how their respective departments may be of resource or assistance regarding the concerns that must be addressed in the plan required by the NSF.

This session will highlight the scope, roles and responsibilities of each of these offices, as well as how and when they work together to help move research projects forward.

Session Description
“Financial management of sponsored programs is a shared responsibility of the Principal Investigator, College Grant Manager, College Financial Leadership, and NU-RES. NU-RES partners with Northeastern faculty and colleges to support the proper stewardship of research grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, or other sponsored projects. Effective stewardship through robust award management builds trust with our collaborators and funding agencies and supports Northeastern’s growth as a preeminent research institution.
This session will begin with a presentation from NU-RES Finance speaking to the keys to successful financial monitoring. This will lead to a roundtable with representatives from the College of Science, College of Engineering, and Khoury College discussing tips, tricks, and best practices for their respective colleges including key financial metrics they watch, common pitfalls, effective PI meetings, and how to address tough situations. This session should help promote administrative and interdepartmental collaboration and an open environment for others to share their ideas, tips, tricks, and experiences.”
