NSF PAPPG 19-1: Improvements, and automatic compliance checks

May 13, 2019

NSF PAPPG 19-1 was effective February 25, 2019.  This version included significant changes; for example, “Chapter II.B.2, Proposal Font, Spacing and Margin Requirements, has been updated to specify that fonts not listed in the PAPPG may be used for mathematical formulas, equations, or when inserting Greek letters or special characters.”

NSF has been making improvements to Research.gov, the replacement for Fastlane.  Latex documents are now processed with fewer errors, many which can be addressed by changing font types, etc.  NSF continues to work on perfecting the processing of Latex documentation.

In a recent NSF forum on Separately Submitted Collaborative Proposals from Multiple Organizations on Research.gov, NSF confirmed that all PAPPG 19-1 required updateswere implemented in Research.gov, along with other updates:

  • Ability to delete in-progress proposals, proposal file updates, or budget revisions
  • Ability to select awardee institution on proposal creation if PI belongs to multiple
    institutions
  • Additional usability enhancements and bug fixes

Key improvements coming to Research.gov in the Q3 release are:

  • Support for collaborative proposals with subawards
  • SPO/AOR e-mail notifications upon sharing proposal access

Automated Compliance Checks are incorporated in both Research.gov and Fastlane.  As a reminder, “The automated compliance checks also apply when a proposal file update (PFU) is performed on a proposal. The compliance checks will be run on all sections of the proposal, regardless of which section was updated during the PFU. Proposers should be aware that if a proposal was previously submitted successfully, a PFU performed on the proposal will be prevented from submission if the proposal does not comply with the compliance checks in effect at the time.”
